The Touring Towns

A small town at the junction of the Ovens and Buckland Rivers, with idyllic picnic spots along the river banks, Porepunkah is also right on the Murray to the Mountains rail trail and is the nearest town to Mount Buffalo. There are numerous riverside picnic areas and local wineries including Mayford Wines, Ringer Reef and Boynton’s Feathertop Winery.  The Porepunkah airfield offers flights and the thrill of microlighting. Canoeing and rafting on the river is also popular as is swimming in the refreshing water hole.

High-country camping

Sleep under the stars in summer or rug up in a tent in winter at serviced campsites, secluded bushland clearings or historic cattlemen's huts. Camping in the snow Camping in the snow-covered Alps is one of Victoria's great adventures. Pitch a tent on the Bogong High Plains from Mount Cope to Mount Nelse and experience a tranquil, white world.

Escaping the city heat Head to the Alpine National Park in the warmer months. Make camp in the snow gum woodlands at Lake Catani or camp amid wildflowers at Falls Creek. Cool off and cast a line in the Rocky Valley Dam or other Kiewa Valley waterways. Collapse in your tent at Mount Hotham after traversing the Razorback Trail, or trek to historic cattlemen's huts around the Bogong High Plains and Mount Buller.

Camp at serviced sites in the Alpine Valleys between Myrtleford, Porepunkah and Bright, and along the Ovens River to Harrietville.

Family-friendly sites to remote spots Spend summer days with the kids on the water and enjoy creature comforts in your onsite cabin or caravan at parks around Eildon and Bright. Really 'rough it' in the isolated areas of the Delatite, Howqua, Goulburn, Broken and Jamieson rivers.
